“Just because someone carries it well doesn’t mean it isn’t heavy.”
- Unknown
This sentence inspired me to visit hospice facilities and photograph someone living there. For my genre
project,
I wanted to capture a raw and honest moment.
I reached out to several hospices until Ms. Welte in Stuttgart kindly said yes. She was such a warm and
open
person - you’d think all that was missing was a leather jacket and a motorcycle.
But she had cancer. Metastases. Antibody therapy.
And at some point, she accepted it and simply said,
“Then I
guess I have to die.”
But with dignity. With support. And in a beautiful place.
She was happy there. She didn’t think negatively about her situation - she just wanted to enjoy the time
she
had
left.
*Ms. Welte is no longer with us.
